Javor Gardev, PhD
Stage & Film Director

Javor Gardev is a multidisciplinary artist and scholar with extensive expertise in theater, film, and philosophy. Javor Gardev was born in Sofia in 1972. He graduated from the National Lyceum for Ancient Languages and Cultures “St. Constantine-Cyril The Philosopher”. He holds a Master’s degree in Philosophy (MPhil) from Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” and a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree in Directing from the National Academy of Theatre and Film Arts in Sofia. A recipient of the prestigious Fulbright Award, Gardev specialized at Northwestern University’s School of Communication in the United States.

Javor Gardev earned his PhD in Art Studies from the New Bulgarian University, where he successfully defended an interdisciplinary dissertation bridging philosophy, social sciences and theater studies.

Javor Gardev has staged over fifty theatrical performances, in his home country and abroad, which were presented in Sofia, Berlin, Paris, Lille, Bern, Gdansk, Moscow, St.Petersburg, Lisbon, Chicago, San Francisco, Seattle, Skopje, Rotterdam and Utrecht, to name a few. Javor Gardev has directed several international co-productions with France, Germany and the Netherlands. He has also staged theatre performances in Russia, Turkey, North Macedonia and Montenegro.

Among the plays he has staged are William Shakespeare’s Hamlet and King Lear, Edward Albee’s The Play about The Baby and The Goat, or Who is Sylvia? (endorsed by Mr. Albee), Heiner Müller’s Quartet,  Jean Genet’s The Maids, Peter Weiss’ Marat/Sade, Martin McDonagh’s The Pillowman and A Behanding in Spokane, Tracy Letts’s Killer Joe, Ethan Coen’s Almost an Evening.

Javor Gardev has won numerous Bulgarian and international theatre and film awards. He currently serves as a director at the National Theatre of Bulgaria.

Javor Gardev’s feature film debut Zift won nineteen domestic and international awards and special mentions. Javor Gardev won “Silver St. George” for Best Director in the Main Competition on the 30th Moscow IFF. Zift was part of the selections of fifty-four International Film Festivals including Toronto IFF, 2008 (Official Selection, Discovery). Zift was Bulgaria’s official submission for the 2008 ‘Best Foreign Language Picture’ Academy Award category and part of the Official Selection for the European Film Academy Awards, 2008. Until 2009, it was the highest grossing Bulgarian feature film of the last two decades. The film is part of the VOD and streaming platforms of the Independent Film Channel, Sundance Channel, Netflix and HBO Max, as well as part of the official selection for the European Film Academy Awards. Since 2009, Javor Gardev is a member of the European Film Academy.

Javor Gardev also carries out artistic actions and performances, including the video-mystification “Visual Police”. Beyond film and theater, Gardev is an accomplished radio drama director. His production The Atoll received the Grand Prix Europe for Best European Radio Drama in Berlin (1999).

Javor Gardev’s works, even those with a deceptively simple set-up, invariably possess a multi-layered reflectiveness. His artistic language is unconventional and continuously innovative. Besides his prolific theatre work, Javor Gardev has directed several radio-drama features and authored performance art and video art works.
